"Javelinas: Knowing Our Neighbors" runs October 17, 2009 through September 2010

Through informative texts, artists' submissions, and a community art project, this exhibit will both educate and celebrate the curious critters with whom many of us have a love-hate relationship.

Lecture on 'Javelinas' from 2-3pm; Reception to follow. Lecture is suitable for all ages.

"The Conservation of the Coa Valley Rock Art in Portugal" by Antonio Pedro Batarda Fernandes

Antonio Pedro Batarda Fernandes holds an undergraduate degree in Archaeology and a Masters degree in Managing Archaeological Sites from University College in London. Until 2007, Antonio was charged with the duty of coordinating the Coa Valley rock art conservation program. In early 2008, he initiated a research program at Bournemouth University School of Conservation Sciences on the conservation of the Coa Valley rock art outcrops.

"The Deep Structure of Non-Iconic Rock Art: Human Universals" by Ekkehart Malotki

Ekkehart Malotki is a professor emeritus of languages at Northern Arizona University where he taught German, Latin, and Hopi from 1977 until 2004. For more than twenty-five years, his work as an ethnolinguist focused on the preservation of Hopi language and culture. During the last twenty years, his passion for rock art has taken him to the Sahara, to the Paleolithic caves in France, to Italy, Scandinavia and Mexico, and twice to Australia. In addition, he has devoted much of his time to the photography and interpretation of the rock art of the American Southwest.

Ekkehart will also be selling and autographing two of his books: Stone Chisel and Yucca Brush: Colorado Plateau Rock Art and The Rock Art of Arizona: Art for Life's Sake. All three of his rock art books have received prestigious awards. His most recent one, The Rock Art of Arizona: Art for Life's Sake, provides in 384 color photographs a comprehensive overview of the state's rock art wealth.

In celebration of American Indian Heritage Month, the Center hosts a free day of fun and learning for the whole family! Enjoy performances, storytelling, and special guest exhibitors from all over the Valley. Kids can make bead bracelets, learn about native gardening and ancient petroglyphs. Adults can talk with native artists and look at art for sale. Join us for one of our biggest events of the year!
