PEOPLE WERE HERE

Ongoing

At the Deer Valley Rock Art Center, you can explore evidence of past human activity and learn about its connection to life in the 20th century. The petroglyphs and the hillside have continuing significance for Native American people of this region. The marks link people to traditions of migration and occupation in the area. Some of the petroglyphs are connected to the religious teachings of different tribes today.

 JAVELINAS: KNOWING OUR NEIGHBORS

Opens October 17, 2009

Deer Valley Rock Art Center is proud to announce its upcoming exhibit about our Javelinas: Knowing Our Neighborsneighbors, the javelinas. Many people are quick to dismiss javelinas as neighborhood nuisances, aggressive raiders of yards and gardens in many southwestern communities. Despite their bad reputation, javelinas are fascinating, distinctive creatures that are uniquely adapted to living in the desert.

Through informative text panels, artists' submissions, and a community art project, the exhibit will both educate and celebrate. It will draw attention to the realities of sharing the desert with our javelina neighbors and, at the same time, honor the curious critters with whom many of us have a love-hate relationship. A free opening reception will be held on October 17 and will include refreshments and a guest lecturer. Everyone is welcome.
